Post 3: A blank (actually black) slate



Post 3: I had drawn many designs for the interior layout on graph paper. I spent hundreds of hours learning and researching how one puts an electrical system into a van. For me, and apparently many others, the electrical system can be the most daunting.

 But first came the basics - insulation and flooring. 





After removing all of the ugly black wall and floor linings, my trusty work buddy, Jim Hough, and I meticulously cut rigid foam to fit between the ridges in the floor. TEDIOUS. Then a full layer of rigid foam. 

This was then followed by a layer of 3/4" plywood subfloor. 




What can be seen by the back doors is natural sheep's wool insulation. More on that later. 
Also seen is the sound deadening that was placed on as many of the metal surfaces as possible. And next......the first sphincter check of the build....installing the ceiling fan.

  Post 6 - February, 2020: Insulation - Baaaaaa-aaaa After placing butcher paper to protect the vinyl floor, I moved to the insulation  This is it -sheep's wool, a natural product that does not off-gas (except for maybe the smell of sheep) and can be stuffed into the 1.5 bazillion crevices in the interior of the van. It can be ripped (in one direction only) by hand making sizing and installation easier.  I spent dozens of hours stuffing this into holes, large and small. My mind would drift off to when I lived on a dairy farm in upstate NY on the VT border..... Tedious but well worth it. Day, after day, after day, of ripping and stuffing.  I thought of Laura and how she is always cold. The extra effort I put in now will add to her, and hence my, comfort later.  I installed some wooden rails that would serve to both attach the wall material as well as to hold the larger pieces of wool in place.  More insulation would be needed once the walls and ceiling were...

Post 7: The first side window - (reader discretion advised: adult language/profanity)

  Post 7: The BIGGEST test to date - the driver's side window - Part I This is a picture from the inside of the van, where the driver's side window would go. I stared at the enCOURAGEment for a long while. I summoned mine and confidently went forward. T he fan installation was one thing, however a HUGE hole in the side of the van for a window that had to fit perfectly...by far another. I had ordered custom after-market windows specifically for the Ford Transit from Motion Windows company. They had a very helpful video for DIYers such as myself. I literally watched it 20 times. Read and re-read the directions dozens of times. Take the window frame (separate piece), make a cardboard template. Tape the template to the window, draw the outline, drill pilot holes for the saw, and cut from the outside. Insert window from the outside after having placed the double-sided tape on the touchpoints, insert the frame from the inside, screw them together, and done! Easy-peasy.  I meticulou...

Start here - Post 1 January, 2020: Among several of life's dreams.....Voltaire

  The Beginning: Post 1 Friends who take an interest in my life's adventures are truly cherished. So many of my friends share the excitement about my van travels (so far just around the western U.S.) and are eager for more info than the occasional Facebook post. At the encouragement of some, I have decided to create this blog. It will be a great timeline for me, and a way to keep my memories through words and photos that will likely surpass my brain's ability to do so.  Since I have just north of a year's worth to catch up, these initial posts will mostly describe my van, Voltaire, and the build of same - my second home and magic carpet to freedom.  I will start by stating that I have had the dream of "vanlife" and the adventure (adVANture) of travel to new places to meet new people for several years.
